Video Data Voice: A Triple-Play Service On Broadband

Once the broadband services have become popular with users now, the demand for getting enhanced services over their existing broadband line is expected to grow.

With the explosive growth of telecom lines with value-added services like broadband, the wire line service providers are now gearing up to provide television, video and advanced services over broadband connections. One of the fastest growing opportunities for telecommunication companies in the wire line segment is providing TV channels over telephone line using Internet protocol — IPTV. It is different from Internet TV.

The new service, namely, IPTV, which will be thrown open to customers on their broadband lines, is full feature high quality television.

This supports standard definition television (SDTV) and high definition television (HDTV), video on demand, digital video recording and interactive applications.

Many international communication equipment suppliers like Nortel, Alcatel and the like are already ready with solutions to offer end-to-end IPTV. Nortel IPTV solutions and Microsoft/Alcatel IPTV solutions have invaded the market in countries like South Korea and China.

The customer premises equipment consists of the existing DSL modem (in case of copper line) or optical network unit in the case of passive optical network being extended to subs premises and a special new generation set top box.

The new technology has four major components. One of these is video head end, where video is captured, processed and stored so that it can be sent over the network to demanding customers.

Another is access network, which may be either of DSL (copper), PON (optical) or VDSL to provide the required bandwidth to run IPTV in the customer premises. The third is backbone or the core network that the service provider builds up to meet the demand for high quality service. The last is the set top box, which is the home network CPE to connect to the TV.

There can be three different types of access network provision up to customer end.

One is bringing fiber directly to each subscriber's premises. The second is bringing fiber to within 4000 feet of the subscriber's premises and using the existing copper wire for the remainder. The last is bringing fiber to within 6000 feet of subscriber's premises and then copper wire for the balance.

The present day access network for telephone lines comprises a mix of fibre and copper wire, using DLC (digital loop carrier) concept. The length of the fibre/copper used may differ in different areas.

Unique Delivery System:

Services provided in IPTV include interactive browsing over Internet on high speed (2 Mbps), voice calls, TV channels, video on demand which is an interactive, unique delivery system that enables customer to choose show time in advance and programme it.

During the show, the customer can rewind, fast forward and pause. Also provided is digital video recording.

The telecom service provider is required to make minimum provision for three standard definition television streams, one high-speed data line and one voice line.

A Bundled Service:

This is a bundled service called triple play service (video, data and voice). Each subscriber requires a minimum bandwidth of 18 Mbps to support these services. This may include future provisioning of HDTV channels.

8 Mbps to 20 Mbps pipe to home will be sufficient to support 2 HDTV channels, 2 SDTV channels, Internet access at 2 Mbps and voice calls.

The set top boxes support SDTV/HDTV service integrated hard disk for recording programmes, digital audio output for connecting to audio systems, web browsers, USB ports and many other options. Alternative set top boxes are also available as an option to high end users. It is an intelligent device loaded with a middleware, which uses client/server architecture with the client residing in the box.

This middleware controls the customer interaction with the service.

The World Forum:

The IPTV World Forum formed in 2005 having members from over 20 countries, including India, is engaged in helping development of IPTV products and services, IPTV marketing, Standardisation of IPTV components and also integrating the content providers and network providers.

It encourages multiple manufacturers across the world to focus their attempts on creating flexible and scalable new opportunities for broadband and telecom service providers, broadcasters, content producers, third party application developers and others who provide the services, content and technologies that make up the global television market place.

It is generally accepted that to hold on to existing customers and reach out to new subscribers during this period of high competitiveness telecommunication companies must offer nothing less than a complete bundled triple-play service that places video at its heart.

In these days of declining cash flow, wireless service providers should grasp such revenue opportunities.
